MAHI TAAPOI

Sustainable Tourism Development

Tourism development that sustains and enhances the well-being of indigenous peoples and their environment, economy and culture is the aspiration of many businesses, communities, local councils and national governments.  It requires a different approach to conventional tourism development.  At the same time, the experiences it fosters need to make sense to the industry if they are to be sold through the international distribution chain.

Mahi Taapoi specialises in eco-cultural tourism development that is grounded in the nature, culture and people of particular places - what the National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations calls “geotourism”.  We have practical experience of community-based tourism in Aotearoa-New Zealand and the Cook Islands dating back two decades.  We have worked one-on-one with individual businesses, with regional clusters, a national tourism organisation, and an international aid agency.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us about any aspect of our work in tourism that is featured here.
