Sustainable Tourism Development

 
 

The TMPIAP provided assistance in the development of a range of well-presented community amenities such as tracks, reserves and assistance in the construction of facilities for the making and sale of crafts based on local resources and skills. Projects included:

  1. BulletRarotonga Cross Island Walk:  Ladders, ropes, and signage were provided to upgrade the accessibility of the Island’s premier walk to a wider range of visitors.

  2. BulletMauke Craft Centre: Support was provided to assist in the construction of a craft centre in the centre of Kimiangatau village on Mauke as an outlet for local crafts and produce.

  3. BulletRapae Botanical Walk: A short track to a knoll overlooking the Rapae hotel was opened up as the first stage in the development of a longer botanical walk to Maungapu.

  4. BulletInland Rarotonga Track Safety Upgrade: Safety upgrades (primarily in the form of short chains, ropes and staples for hand and foot holds) were installed on the most difficult sections of a number of the inland walks of Rarotonga, including the rock face of Raemaru.  The project complemented “Rarotonga’s Mountain Tracks and Plants: A Field Guide” which describes these tracks.

  5. BulletAitutaki washing wells: Refurbishment of a traditional washing basin at Nikaupara as a heritage project for the village and a tourism amenity. The Programme provided materials and the village of Nikaupara undertook all the construction work and landscaping.

  6. BulletNatural Heritage Botanical Identification System: Painted aluminium disks were provided as part of the development of a national botanical identification system.  The disks were secured to trees and bushes to inform visitors about the local flora.  A catalogue enabling the identification numbers to be interpreted was prepared.

  7. BulletAnataketake Cave, Atiu: A ladder and a first aid with cabinet were supplied to improve safety for visitors to the Anataketake cave which is some distance from the central villages of Atiu.

  8. BulletAtiu Women’s Craft Centre: A new wing to the Island Council building on Atiu was built as a Women’s Craft Centre.  The building is used by women from the five villages on Atiu. The Vaine Tini received technical assistance from the Small Business Agency to set the centre up on a commercial footing.

  9. BulletMangaia Women’s Development Centre: Assistance for the renovation of this building (which was already in use for a number of tourism-related activities) was provided through the purchase of building materials.

  10. BulletTotokoitu Research Station Botanical Garden:  Scoping Study: A scoping study was prepared by a landscape architect on the potential for the development of a botanical gardens at the Totokoitu Research Station on Rarotonga.  The analysis showed that  an attractive amenity could be developed without compromising the research function of the station. 

  11. BulletMitiaro Women’s Centre toilet: The Women’s Centre in Mitiaro is a focus of women’s activity and a base for revenue generation through crafts.  This project built a toilet for the centre to make the building more appropriate for continuous use.

  12. BulletWigmore’s Waterfall picnic area: The area around Wigmore’s Waterfall at the southern end of the Cross Island Walk was developed as a picnic area with benches and landscaping.  The pool was deepened to provide a better swimming hole and the access road was graded and remetalled.

  13. BulletAvatiu Harbour pontoon: Support was provided for the construction of a pontoon for transferring passengers from cruise ship launches to the wharf at Avatiu.
