Sustainable Tourism Development

 
 

Given the importance of tourism in the economy and the desire to prepare students for further vocational training at the Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre at Ngatangiia, a range of schooil-based projects were both on Rarotonga and other islands including:

  1. BulletIssues Awareness Teacher Training Workshop:  This workshop was designed to train 15 English and 14 Social Science teachers in the use of the teaching materials on tourism issues awareness prepared at Araura College

  2. BulletForm 6 Curriculum Development:  Support was provided to assist a curriculum adviser and a teacher to visit New Zealand to update their understanding of tourism curricula and negotiate with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority on the introduction of a new Form 6 curriculum for hospitality training in the Cook Islands.  The project also funded the printing of the new teaching materials

  3. BulletHospitality Training Equipment: A range of equipment was supplied to Southern Group schools for hospitality training

  4. BulletAraura College Craft Centre: Support for the purchase of materials was provided to enable Araura College to convert a room into a craft shop to give the school and outlet for materials produced at the school in which hospitality skills could be developed.

  5. BulletKia Orana Videos for Schools: The 15 “Kia Orana” television programmes were dubbed onto two three hour tapes for use as a classroom resource.
